Aurora Floyd by Mary Elizabeth Braddon6/25/2023 ![]() ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. ![]() Edward's introduction evaluates the novel's leading place among 'bigamy-novels' and Braddon's treatment of the power struggle between the sexes, as well as considering the similarities between theauthor and her heroine. She represents a challenge to the mid-Victorian sexual code, and particularly to the feminine ideal of simpering, angelic young ladyhood. But in Aurora Floyd, and in many of the novels written in imitation of it, bigamy is little more than a euphemism, a device to enable the heroine, and vicariously the reader, to enjoy the forbidden sweets of adultery without adulterous intentions.Passionate, sometimes violent, Aurora does succeed in enjoying them, her desires scarcely chastened by her disastrous first marriage. Like Lady Audley, Aurora is a beautiful young woman bigamously married and threatened with exposure by a blackmailer. Aurora Floyd (1862-3), following hot on its heels, achieved almost equal popularity and notoriety. ![]() With Lady Audley's Secret, Mary Elizabeth Braddon had established herself, alongside Wilkie Collins and Mrs Henry Wood, as one of the ruling triumvirate of 'sensation novelists'. ![]() Matthew delmont half american6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() In these pages are stories of Black heroes such as Thurgood Marshall, the chief lawyer for the NAACP, who investigated and publicized violence against Black troops and veterans Benjamin O. ![]() Half American is American history as you’ve likely never read it before. ![]() And yet the stories of these Black veterans have long been ignored, cast aside in favor of the myth of the “Good War” fought by the “Greatest Generation.” Without their crucial contributions to the war effort, the United States could not have won the war. Black troops were at Normandy, Iwo Jima, and the Battle of the Bulge, serving in segregated units and performing unheralded but vital support jobs, only to be denied housing and educational opportunities on their return home. Over one million Black men and women served in World War II. ![]() The definitive history of World War II from the African American perspective, written by civil rights expert and Dartmouth history professor Matthew Delmont ![]() The Gamer, Season 1 by NOT A BOOK6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() For instance, the female characters are cringy. There were some things which keep it from being five stars for me though. I really liked the first half, which is essentially him learning how to use his power and training. He's also an adorable geeky character and has a best friend who is trained in physical combat and helps him navigate the new world of magical abilities. He grinds for skills and XP, regenerates, takes little damage from bullets, and is basically OP af. It's about a Korean teen who is so addicted to video games, he gains the magical ability to be a video game character in the real world. ![]() This is why he introduced this web comic to me. So, you can say that gaming is a pretty big part of our lives. We also have many friends around the world through online gaming. We're both gamers and even met through an online game, Guild Wars 2. I haven't read many mangas/graphnic novels/web comics, but I was recommended this one by my boyfriend. ![]() This Child of Faith by Sophfronia Scott6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() So Sophfronia, her husband Darryl and Tain decided to start attending church together. ![]() As Tain learned about the Bible from vegetables, he began to show an interest in faith, God and spiritual things. ![]() This led to the discovery of other Veggie Tale Silly Songs and the Veggie Tale cartoon. Gunnar hansen book6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Critically-acclaimed author Hansen here tells the real story of the making of the film, its release, and reception, offering unknown behind-the-scenes details, a harrowingly entertaining account of the adventures of low-budget filmmaking, illuminating insights on the film's enduring and influential place in the horror genre and our culture, and a thoughtful meditation on why we love to be scared in the first place. His terrifying portrayal and the inventive work of the cast and crew would give the film the authentic power of nightmare, even while the gritty, grueling, and often dangerous independent production would test everyone involved, and lay the foundations for myths surrounding the film that endure even today. A six-foot-four poet fresh out of grad school with limited acting experience, Gunnar Hansen played the masked, chain-saw-wielding Leatherface. Banned and celebrated, showcased at the Cannes film festival and included in the New York MoMA's collection, it has now come to be recognized widely as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. To critics, it was either "a degrading, senseless misuse of film and time" or "an intelligent, absorbing and deeply disturbing horror film." However it was an immediate hit with audiences. ![]() When The Texas Chain Saw Massacre first hit movie screens in 1974 it was both reviled and championed. ![]() The comfort book haig6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() THE COMFORT BOOK is Haig’s life raft: it’s a collection of notes, lists, and stories written over a span of several years that originally served as gentle reminders to Haig’s future self that things are not always as dark as they may seem.
