All summer in one day by ray bradbury6/30/2023 No one can relate to her and she is on the “outside looking in.” Bradbury was in a way reflecting how children act today towards one another by discriminating those who act different. Since she is an individual and different, Margot is very lonely. She will not change her opinion because others do not agree with her. She remembers the sun, and will openly discuss it, even though others despise her for it. Margot is an individual who does not conform to her society’s ways. Margot’s superior knowledge of the sun makes her different than the kids on Venus who never knew the sun. By the time they remember her in the closet, the rain has already started once again and Margot missed the sun. Before the sun comes out, the other students lock her in the closet jealous of her superior knowledge of the sun. She wrote a poem about the sun, describing the sun in detail, which the other students did not believe but were angered over. Since she remembers the sun and it is what she always is thinking about, her classmates shun her. One girl within the class, Margot, moved from Earth and remembers the sun. On Venus it rains and they rarely see the sun, except for one hour every seven years. The short story, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury tells the story of children who live on Venus.

Left behind books in order6/30/2023 As a former believer in the “Rapture” and premillennial dispensationalism (the most common form of the Left Behind theology), I know how confusing this topic can be for Catholics. Since entering the Catholic Church in 1997, I’ve written over two dozen articles and a major book about the Left Behind theology propagated by LaHaye and many others through books, television, and radio. Since 1995, when the first Left Behind novel appeared, the “end times” series (now twelve volumes strong and with two more coming) has sold some sixty million copies. A founding member of the Moral Majority, LaHaye is best known today as creator/co-author of the mega-selling Left Behind books, the most popular works of Christian fiction in history. Tim LaHaye, one of the most influential Christians-Catholic or Protestant-in America over the past thirty years. It was typical Fundamentalist fare, but the man who penned it was no ordinary Fundamentalist. I will not badger you with the unscriptural practice of making Mary “the mother of God” or “the Queen of Heaven” which comes from Babylonish paganism not Christianity or Scripture. Two years ago I was engaged in an e-mail exchange with a Fundamentalist pastor, who wrote:īut as an effort to still save your soul, if indeed my concerns for you are true, may I urge you to reexamine the Mariolatry of the Church you have bought into. Jane Addams and the Hull-House residents provided kindergarten and day care facilities for the children of working mothers an employment bureau an art gallery libraries English and citizenship classes and theater, music and art classes. During the 1920s, African Americans and Mexicans began to put down roots in the neighborhood and joined the clubs and activities at Hull-House. In the 1890s, Hull-House was located in the midst of a densely populated urban neighborhood peopled by Italian, Irish, German, Greek, Bohemian, and Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants. Some social settlements were linked to religious institutions. Settlement houses typically attracted educated, native born, middle-class and upper-middle class women and men, known as “residents,” to live (settle) in poor urban neighborhoods. The idea spread to other industrialized countries. Social settlements began in the 1880s in London in response to problems created by urbanization, industrialization, and immigration. From Hull-House, where she lived and worked until her death in 1935, Jane Addams built her reputation as the country's most prominent woman through her writing, settlement work, and international efforts for peace. Born in Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860, and graduated from Rockford Female Seminary in 1881, Jane Addams founded, with Ellen Gates Starr, the world famous social settlement Hull-House on Chicago's Near West Side in 1889. The outsider book albert camus6/30/2023 In the Gallimard reception there is a small display of Camus first editions and a yellowing page 21 of the New York Times of 18 October 1957 headlined: "Albert Camus has just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature." It is accompanied by a photograph of Camus by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Much of the material, she says, has never been published before. It is a hefty trove of photographs, drawings, notes, lletters, telegrams and extracts from his books and essays, documenting Camus's connections to and travels in Algeria, Europe, the Americas and Russia. On the desk is Catherine's book, Le Monde en Partage ( The World to Share), published to mark the centenary of Camus's birth. We are sitting in the tall-ceilinged former office of Claude Gallimard, son of Gaston, founder of the French publishing company that brought Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and André Gide to the wider world.Ĭamus was being driven from Paris to his Provençal home by Gaston's nephew Michel, when the car careered off the road and hit two trees killing both menCamus, the author of La Peste and L'Etranger, was 46 when he died Catherine and her twin brother, Jean, were 14. It was horrible enough that he was taken away the idea that this was done deliberately is unbearable. He was Papa," she says, her voice faltering a fraction. "Was he killed by the KGB? Kermit (not exactly a frog yet) was a featured puppet on the show. While a freshman at the University of Maryland, Jim Henson began his own daily, five-minute television show, Sam and Friends. This combination of television and puppetry would mark his career. Jim was fascinated by television and while still in high school he found television work as a puppeteer for a local Washington, DC station. American puppeteer, animator, television and film producer. Theodore roosevelt iv6/28/2023 This area also happens to lie in San Juan County, the poorest in Utah and one of the poorest in the nation. Fittingly, for the first time, a monument proclamation specified the inclusion of Native Americans as advisors and in a co-management role of the monument. These are the canyons in which the Navajo resisted forced relocation and these are the home to 100,000 sacred First Nation sites. Five First Nation tribes had sought this designation for an area rich in native artifacts and still carrying memory of themselves in its hard places. Shortly before leaving office, President Obama used his executive authority under the Antiquities Act to confer national monument designation on 1.35 million acres of Utah's canyon lands. Nowhere is the tension between short and long-term values so furiously fought as on our western public lands – a multi-generational struggle around issues of sovereignty, identity, and regional or national definitions of well-being.
